Hey friend,
I used to think that forgiving someone and reconciling were the same. That if you forgive someone, the closeness should return and the friendship should go back to what it was.
But over time, I have realised something important.
Forgiveness is internal. It is personal. It is between me and me. It is something I can choose without the other person’s participation and sometimes it is something I must choose again and again until my heart catches up.
Reconciliation is different. It requires both people. It needs honesty, willingness, and effort from both sides.
And sometimes the distance in a friendship is not only because of what they did. Sometimes it is because of something I did. Something I did not see at the time. A tone. A reaction. A pattern.
Forgiveness frees the heart, but reconciliation requires responsibility and readiness from both people.
Some relationships heal back into closeness. Others find a new shape. And some do not return at all, even after forgiveness.
What matters is that we learn to ask the honest questions:
Is reconciliation possible?
Is it safe?
Is it wise?
And am I willing to look at my own role too?
Question:
Where do you need forgiveness, and where do you need honesty about reconciling?
